Fretting the Monochord
Frequency and Proportion
When a string is divided in half, it vibrates at double the rate. A string that vibrates at a rate of 110 Hz would vibrate at a rate of 220 Hz when cut in half. The shorter the vibrating segment, the higher the frequency produced. The frequency is proportional to the length of the string. This information can be used to determine where frets should be placed on the monochord to divide segments of the string into corresponding notes.
